“A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war; and a time of peace.” Ecclesiastes 3:8

In High School I interceded for a Christian named Steve, who has a pacifist, and refused to defend himself or anyone else. The gangsters quickly figured this out, and Steve was accosted daily. After helping him out he yelled at me because I hit the people that were slapping him around. I asked him “Is there anything you think is worth fighting for?” He told me my views were patently evil, and that I was worse than the people who were abusing him. Unfortunately, pacifism is rather deeply ingrained in many churches, not just the Quakers, Adventists and Amish. In response to Israel being attacked by Hamas and the PLO, Franklin Graham donated two ambulances to Israel: in the hope that life saving measures will lead to peace.

When I was in the Marines, I met a Navy Corpsman who was a Mennonite, and referred to himself as a “conscientious cooperator.” He was willing to serve, and willing to stand in harm’s way, but he was not willing to fight. There have been medics and corpsmen who won the Congressional Medal of Honor, so I don’t question their courage or their sincerity.  I question their doctrine. It is impossible to fight a war with an army of stretcher bearers.

“The sermon on the Mount is the last word in Christian ethics. Everyone respects the Quakers. Still, it is not on these terms that Ministers assume their responsibilities of guiding states. Their duty is first so to deal with other nations as to avoid strife and war and to eschew aggression in all its forms, whether for nationalistic or ideological objects. But the safety of the State, the lives and freedom of their own fellow countrymen, to whom they owe their position, make it right and imperative in the last resort, or when final and definite conviction has been reached, that the use of force should not be excluded. If circumstances are such to warrant it, force maybe used.” -Sir Winston Churchill, p320 The Gathering Storm

I am somewhat amazed that that while many Evangelicals will affirm the Right of Nation States to defend themselves, and even affirm the Second Amendment to the US Constitution as securing an Individual Right of self-defense: they refuse to put their views into practice by being proficient and maintaining a firearm. When you encourage Christians to do so, they refuse and accuse you of taking revenge.

God doesn’t owe you Divine Intervention because you refuse to be responsible for your safety and the safety of your family. All the spiritual excuses, the rapture, warfare prayer, facing the “Goliath of a flat tire” won’t do when your house is being invaded, or your wife or children are being molested. Your pacifism won’t do at Judgement Day when you have to explain to God why you used the Sermon on the Mount to evade your responsibility, when the rest of the Bible balances out what Jesus said about personal behavior in the Sermon. (Jesus was refuting the teaching that you are obligated to seek personal revenge,)

David slew the actual Goliath (Read I Samuel 17). The Jews stood for their lives (Esther 9) and Jesus will slay His enemies when He returns at the head of His army (Revelation 19). Today, Christians are increasingly finding themselves surrounded by growing hostility. We are heading towards an Esther 9 situation, and our brothers and sisters in Christ in other nations are already there.

I think there are things worth fighting for. In another quote Churchill wrote-

“Still, if you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case.  You may have to fight when there is no chance of victory, because it is better to perish than live as slaves.” -WSC p. 348 of ‘The Gathering Storm’.

The Constitution Party of Wisconsin (CPoW) does believe in political action. We don’t tolerate criminal behavior or terrorism. We affirm the individual right to self-defense, and the right to organize a Militia. We encourage our people to be proficient with a firearm. Regarding our Military our Platform states-

“The very purpose of Government, as defined in the 2nd paragraph of the Declaration of Independence, is:’to secure these [unalienable] rights, Governments are instituted among Men,’ To fulfill this obligation, the Preamble of the Constitution states one of the duties specifically delegated to the Federal Government is to ‘Provide for the common defense.’ US Constitution, Article I, Section 8, Clauses 11-16 give Congress further direction and authority in this area, including the power ‘To raise and support Armies’ and ‘To provide and maintain a Navy.’ It is a primary obligation of the federal government to provide for the common defense, and to be vigilant regarding potential threats, prospective capabilities, and perceived intentions of potential enemies.”

“We fully support well-regulated militias organized at the state level. Further, we fully support and encourage the restoration of militia at the county and community level in compliance with our patriotic and legal responsibilities as free citizens of these United States.”
