Last week, I touched on reasons it would be prudent for the American Left to focus on building an independent challenge to both Donald Trump’s right-populism and Hillary Clinton’s neoliberal centrism. This can — and, arguably, should — be done both within and without our current electoral system. With Bernie Sanders effectively out of the race, one extremely easy way to further this goal is to vote for a third-party candidate… preferably Green Party candidate Dr. Jill Stein.
In a vital interview with Rolling Stone, Stein makes a convincing case for why, if you share her politics, voting Green is better than voting for the lesser of two evils. In response to a question on her open letter to Sanders, she starts out by affirming her invitation to join her on a third party ticket still stands:
I’m not holding my breath, but I’m not ruling it out either. The Green Party has been reaching out to him since 2011 without a response. There are a lot of commonalities in our agendas, in our views. Technically he is a political independent — or used to be, up until his recent registration as a Democrat — so we’ve long been exploring the potential for collaboration.
…After the beating that he is getting — this real, purposeful, I think, sabotage by the DNC — we’ll see if he’ll have a change of heart. I don’t know.
